Communication is a journey, and every journey needs a starting point.
At Baby Sign Bibs™, our mission has always been simple: to reduce mealtime frustration and help you connect with your little one before they say their first words. Lately, we’ve had some great conversations with our community about the "language" of signing, and we wanted to share the why behind our current collection.
The "Why" Behind Our Signs
Our current bib sets use gestures based on simplified American Sign Language (ASL). If you’ve ever watched a baby-signing tutorial online or followed global early-learning programs, you’ve likely seen these signs in action.
We chose this system for a few key reasons:
-
Global Recognition: ASL-based signs are the most widely used in baby-signing programs worldwide. This means more resources, videos, and songs are available to help you and your baby learn together.
-
Simplified for Tiny Hands: These signs are chosen specifically because they are "iconic"—meaning the gesture looks like the object (like "eat" or "more"). This makes them much easier for developing motor skills to mimic.
-
A Universal Bridge: At this age, signing isn't about mastering a complex linguistic dialect; it’s about creating a "communication bridge." Using these signs helps your baby express their needs today, regardless of which language they grow up speaking tomorrow.
Respecting Our Roots: An Auslan Update
We hear our Australian community loud and clear! We absolutely respect and value Auslan (Australian Sign Language) and its vital place in our local culture.
Because we want to support every family’s preference, we are thrilled to share that we are currently exploring an Australian-specific range. We are hard at work looking into Auslan-aligned signs to ensure that families who want to stick strictly to local signs have a beautiful, functional tool to do so.
Start Signing Today
You don’t have to wait for a specific dialect to start reap the rewards of a signing household. Our current limited run of bibs is designed to jumpstart those early "lightbulb moments" between parent and child.
Whether it’s signaling for "water" or telling you they are "all done" (without throwing the bowl!), our bibs are here to make the transition to speech smoother, one meal at a time.
